Crosstown Arts 2020 Residencies (Memphis, TN)

Add to Favorites Report Listing

Call to artists for residency applications.

Applications are accepted from May 15th-July 15th for all residencies the following year.

Crosstown Arts offers multidisciplinary residencies in Memphis, TN, to both visiting and Memphis-based artists and curators, who are working in any creative discipline including visual and performing arts, film, music, and writing in all genres.

All artist residencies include a private studio workspace. Studios have varying configurations as well as amenities. In addition to a private practice space, musician residencies include access to a shared, informal recording studio with standard recording equipment, software, and a basic backline.

Residents are provided meals five days a week in the cafe at Crosstown Arts.

Live/work artist residencies include a private bedroom/bathroom next to a shared living area and kitchen. A family housing option is available as well as accessible housing for residents with disabilities. All residencies are offered at no cost to the participants who are responsible for covering their own travel expenses to and from Memphis and studio materials.

All resident artists are asked to participate in a limited number of public engagement activities (such as public performance/projects, informal artist talks, and open studio events) while in Memphis.

These three-month residency sessions are offered each year in the spring (February 1st-April 30th) and in the fall (September 15th-December 15th). Shorter twenty-day sessions are available in the summer and can be attended consecutively. One studio-only residency per year is available for up to ten months. Crosstown Arts offers select sponsored and specialized residencies each year as part of the application process.

Sponsored residencies often include special requirements for public engagement projects and/or work and involve direct, ongoing contact with a partnering organization during the residency. Sponsored residencies may or may not include paid stipends for residents. Specialized residencies include dedicated equipment and software that is particular to certain disciplines. Applicants are encouraged to read about sponsored and specialized residencies in detail, during each application period, as these residencies may vary.

Anyone 21 years of age or older is welcome to apply. There are no specific project requirements for accepted residents who are encouraged to experiment and explore new ideas or further develop current work already in process.

Residents are given a membership, for the duration of their residency, to Crosstown Arts’ on-site shared art-making workspace. This facility includes a range of analog and digital fabrication and production resources including multiple CNC/laser cutters, a wood shop, a Mac-based computer lab, a large-format digital printing service, a silkscreen/print shop, a small recording studio, and individual editing bays for video/audio production.

Founded in 2010, Crosstown Arts (501c3) completed the renovation of Crosstown Concourse in 2017, a one-million-square-foot former Sears & Roebuck distribution warehouse. The Concourse building is now home to Crosstown Arts’ contemporary art center that includes the artist residency program, large-scale exhibition/installation spaces, multiple galleries, screening rooms, and a space dedicated to live music performance. Crosstown Arts also operates an after-school program, a community-organized exhibition/performance venue, a 425-seat black box performing arts theater, a cafe and bar.

Crosstown Concourse is also home to a major health and wellness initiative, including a walk-in clinic for the uninsured and a fitness facility, both available to participants in Crosstown Arts’ residency program. A variety of restaurants are located in the Concourse building, as well as a small grocery store, coffee shop, juice bar, pharmacy, and other commercial, retail, and residential tenants.
