Event History

The Hermione Hammond Drawing Award was established in 2012, in memory of the artist Hermione Hammond (1910-2005) to encourage the practice of representational drawing among art students. Since 2017, it has been run in partnership with Mall Galleries, central London’s leading gallery celebrating contemporary visual arts through a lively and diverse programme of exhibitions and events. The Award has so far been given to four art students, Rupert Smissen (Norwich University of the Arts, 2012), Philip Adamson (Northumbria University, 2013), Magi Kemp (Edinburgh College of Art, 2014), and Gideon Summerfield (Royal Drawing School, 2017).

Copyright Policy

The copyright and all other intellectual property rights in and to Works, will remain the property of the artist and any enquiries in relation to such rights will be referred to the artist. So far as any rights in the Works are owned by a third party that third party will remain the owner of such rights in and to the Works.

Image Usage Rights

The Exhibition Administrators have the right to copy and/or reproduce the Works and to communicate and/or issue such copies to the public in connection with the exhibition, for advertising the sale of the Works, for educational and public workshops, and for general marketing or promotional purposes, and other related activities, including without limitation the incorporation of images of the Works within promotional and marketing materials, postcards, catalogues, posters, DVDs, on Exhibition Administrators' websites, in workshop presentations and on information screens throughout the exhibiting gallery and any media now known or hereafter devised.

A £2,000 award for current art students to encourage and reward the practice of contemporary representational drawing.

Works will be judged by the organisers of the Award, representatives from Mall Galleries, and Head Judge Peter Clossick NEAC - member of the New English Art Club and Past President of The London Group.

The award is open to current students at recognised art institutions in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland

- Entrants must be aged 18 or over

- Submission is free; there is no charge to enter 

- Artists may submit up to six works each

- Entries must have been completed after 1st January 2017

- Multiple colours are not permitted

- Acceptable media: Pencil / graphite, pastels, oil pastels, charcoal, conte, sanguine, pen, ink. Please note that printmaking is not accepted.

- Entries may be hand-drawn from life or from an imagined image, but not from photographs

- The subject can represent any form of human, animal or plant life, a still life, an interior, or any scene - witnessed or imagined
