Event History

The Mudhouse Residency was born of an idea hatched by two artists, who met serendipitously in New York as roommates and discovered they were born on the same day, and shared a passion for painting and for bringing like minded artists together. The Mudhouse is coming into its fifth year of creating the time and space for international artists to focus on their passion, connect and collaborate with other professionals, and enjoy the wild beauty, simple pleasures, luxury and ruin, that encapsulates our small mountain village.

What Makes this event different?

The village of Agios Ioannis, located on the southern side of the Greek island of Crete, dates back to the 15th century. In the 1950’s, when irrigation systems brought fresh water from the mountains to the coast, the village became largely uninhabited and many of the stone and mud structures fell into ruin. Repopulated towards the end of the century by international visionaries, renovation has been sporadic and unique, with English gardens nestled among the crumbling original footprint. The Mudhouse is one of the few renovated structures to utilize traditional Cretan construction methods. Though our village is rustic, our studio facilities include a grand piano for a musician/ composer, a practice space with athletic flooring for dancers/ choreographers, a large, well lit and well ventilated studio facility for visual artists, and abundant natural and manmade oddities and beauties to suit all interests, from writers to photographers to plein air painters. Past residents have included artists from the United States, Germany Denmark, Australia, Ireland, South Korea, Italy, Peru, Brazil and Canada. We strive to create an international community and a professional network among our artists, lasting a lifetime.

The Mudhouse Residency is designed to provide a cultural immersion: living, working and dining in the mountain village of Agios Ioannis. The residency is inclusive to a number of artistic disciplines, with the facilities to accommodate studio artists, photographers, writers, choreographers and composers.  Meals are served family style and group trips have been organized to tour the ancient Minoan ruins at Mochlos, visit the Florentine monastery at Toplou, swim in the blue green waters of the Libyan sea and hike across the Thripti mountain range.

We will be holding two residency sessions in 2019; the first session will be June 28 - July 12, and the second session will be July 15 - July 29. The cost of the residency program is €2100 for the two week duration.

The Studio Residency is designed for professional artists with an established studio practice seeking the time and space to realize an individual project. The Studio Residency includes 24 hour access to a shared studio space equipped with natural light, cross ventilation and electrical outlets, tables, chairs, and easels. Dancers and choreographers are provided use of a separate clean space with athletic flooring. Access to the Music house concert hall and grand piano is available to one composer-in-residence per session.

The Independent Residency provides the time and structure to focus on a non-studio based project, be it a novel, screenplay, video, or photographic series. Crete is a visual feast for the eyes, arresting in natural beauty but also a complex system of modern life existing in the footprints of ancient civilizations. Hike across olive orchards or spend the time contentedly holed up in the peaceful solitude of the mountain village of Agios Ioannis. The village is abundant in charming gardens and writing nooks. The Mudhouse is pleased to host a reading, screening or viewing of works in progress as desired.

All Programs include the accommodations of the resident for the duration of the Residency, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner each day within the village.
