Event History

Sail Britain's programme is entering it's fifth year of creative and interdisciplinary exploring of the UK's coastline and waters. Our 2019 season will build upon a very successful year in 2018 which saw a wide variety of projects undertaken, spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, film making, poetry, dance and others. Collaborations with arts centres and individuals took place and exhibitions and events were held at An Lanntair in Stornoway, the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness, the Tent Gallery, Edinburgh, in Ullapool, Lochinver, the Royal Geographical Society and St Katharine Docks in London. The programme welcomes people from all backgrounds to join our growing community.

What Makes this event different?

Sail Britain is (as far as we know) the UK's only cross disciplinary platform for creative practitioners to explore the ocean first hand on a sailing boat, working towards an increased understanding of the oceans, what makes them special, and bringing together the arts and sciences for positive change.

Calling artists, change makers and ocean lovers to join Sail Britain’s interdisciplinary creative programme in 2019! We will be undertaking a series of voyages on the West Coast of Scotland, exploring the ocean, the coastline, it’s ecology and communities. Join us onboard!

Sail Britain is an interdisciplinary project working towards positive change for the oceans through sailing, creative practice and the development and exchange of ideas. Examining our relationship with the sea while learning how to sail an ocean-going vessel allows privileged insights into an inaccessible environment. The programme will work with crew members from the arts, sciences and communities to explore issues such as marine plastic pollution, Climate Change, singing on the sea, the cultural importance of islands, and what it means to be small on a big Blue Planet!

The voyage will take place in one week legs from late April till September. Different sections focus on different themes, but all follow our strong creative and social ethos in an inclusive environment.

Please visit our website for further details and feel free to get in touch with questions or suggestions, we’re always happy to say hello. Everyone welcome regardless of background!
