Event History

For over 30 years, the Newport Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition has been a highly anticipated event by artists, curators and collectors in Rhode Island and beyond. This year, the Newport Art Museum is excited to expand the entry to artists throughout New England (Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine), showcasing an eclectic, regional survey of artworks in various mediums. This year’s juried exhibition will be on view in the historic Griswold House. We’re very pleased to announce that Dr. Sharon Matt Atkins, Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Brooklyn Museum, will be our 2020 exhibition juror.

CALL FOR ENTRIES The Newport Annual 2020

For over 30 years, the Newport Annual Juried Exhibition has been an event highly anticipated by artists, curators, and collectors in Rhode Island and beyond.

This year, the Newport Art Museum is excited to expand the entry to artists throughout New England, showcasing an eclectic, regional survey of artworks in various mediums. Artists in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine are invited to submit.

We’re very pleased to announce that Dr. Sharon Matt Atkins, Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Brooklyn Museum, will be our 2020 exhibition juror, who will jury the exhibition from online submissions only. Learn more about Dr. Atkins >

This year’s juried exhibition will be on view in the historic Griswold HouseJanuary 25 - April 26, 2020.

Awards: In addition to selecting featured artists for The Newport Annual exhibition, the juror will also award the following cash prizes:

Best-in-Show: $1,000
Second Place: $100
Third Place: $100
Members’ Prize: $100 

NEW! For the first time, The Newport Annual 2020 will use an online jurying platform called SlideRoom, and is offering two workshops to assist artists with their submissions. These free workshops are intended to help artists with the online submission process. Learn tips on how to select and photograph your artwork, as well as how to process and upload them to SlideRoom.

To Submit: The Newport Annual 2020 will only accept submissions through SlideRoom between August 12 and September 27, 2019. A link to the submission page will be available at www.newportartmuseum.org at 10am on August 12th and will close at 5pm on September 27. Artists may submit a total of 3 images, documenting up to 3 distinct artworks.

Entry Fee: $35 for Newport Art Museum members $45 for non-members

Eligibility and Requirements:
Artists must be living in CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, or VT. Artists may submit work in any media. The Museum cannot accept works of art that are living (flowers, plants, etc.). Works of art must be original and current (completed 2018 or 2019). Submitting artists must pay the entry fee to have their work considered by the Juror. To submit as a member, your membership must be valid through December 31, 2019.

All works of art accepted for exhibition must be:
Available during the exhibition dates
No larger than 5 feet on the longest/largest size—no exceptions.
New to the Museum—has not been exhibited before at the Newport Art Museum
Properly prepared for installation and ready to hang or display Shipping/Art

Drop-Off:
Works of art accepted for inclusion in the exhibition must be shipped to the Museum or dropped off during the set drop-off times. Works shipped to the Museum must arrive at the Museum December 9 -21, 2019.

The Newport Art Museum strongly recommends that artists obtain tracking numbers when shipping packages of works of art to the Museum. Shipped works of art must be accompanied by a signed loan agreement and a prepaid packing label for return shipping (included in the package with the art). Drop-off Dates: Works of art can be dropped off at the Museum on the following dates and times: Friday, December 6: 12pm – 7pm. Saturday, December 7: 10am – 5pm. The Newport Art Museum reserves the right to not include work that is deemed unstable or that is not professionally presented. The Museum will insure work (for up to $1,000) while on exhibition.The Museum is not responsible for works of art during transit to/from the Museum. The Museum and Curatorial Team reserve the right to determine the placement and arrangement for works of art without consultation with the artist. Special requirements for display and art handling must be noted on the loan form (sent to artists accepted for exhibition).
