Artist Residency Opportunity in Willamette Valley

The A to Z Artist in Residence program offers a 15-month immersion in the natural cycle of a vintage from grapes to glass. The selected artist will first work the 2022 vintage harvest as a paid intern, and work alongside our seasonal harvest crew and winemaking and production staff. After the harvest, the artist will receive support from A to Z and will have access to staff and properties for a year of artistic reflection and creation. During a second harvest, the artist's time will be split between winery harvest and artistic work. The residency will conclude with a public showcase of some of the year’s work through a gallery showing, lecture, reading or performance.

About the Harvest Internship

The internship presents a unique opportunity to learn more about winemaking on different production scales and with different stylistic goals. It provides a diverse work experience, including but not limited to, grape receival, sorting, pressing, punch downs, tank dig-outs, racking, transfers, barrel work, inoculations, wine movements, juice, must and wine additions, driving a forklift and as always, cleaning.

Harvest interns work a demanding schedule, which will almost certainly include long hours, overtime, and weekend work.  The role requires the ability to stand and move for at least ten hours; to lift, bend, rotate, move and carry up to 45 pounds over the course of the shift and on a repetitive basis, and to climb stairs, ladders and work on catwalks.  We expect people to work well within a team environment and work with individuals in a respectful manner that is consistent with the company’s values.

About the Residency

Location: The Artist in Residence will primarily work at the REX HILL property in the Willamette Valley. The artist will have access to the winery, vineyards and staff throughout the course of the residency.

Duration: The residency begins with participation in the 2022 harvest as a Harvest Intern. Harvest is anticipated to begin in early September, and continue through mid-November. Following the conclusion of the harvest, the art residency will commence.

Disciplines, work equipment and assistance: We are open to proposals from artists and writers across all mediums and disciplines including metal or wood working.  To learn more about our current and past residents, visit our website at https://www.atozwineworks.com/Artist-in-Residence-Application

Support: The art residency includes a monthly stipend of $800 for the duration of the residency, beginning after completion of the harvest internship. Depending on the medium and artist’s proposed focus, limited additional consideration may be provided in support of furnishing project materials.

Expectations of the artist: A to Z Wineworks supports people, places, and culture. It seems especially important now to support the liberal arts that help us find ways to expand vision and engage with diverse, thoughtful perspectives that support our growth as human beings. The artist will be expected to engage with the staff and contribute to the culture of the winery through interactions and presentations, including providing materials to feature in regular internal communications. The artist will engage with the community at the end of the residency through a public showcase of some of the year’s work in a gallery or installation showing, lecture, reading or performance.

Application Information: Interested artists should submit the materials listed below by July 22, 2022:

  • Confirmation of availability for the length of the residency: September 2022 – November 2023
  • A cover letter, describing the artist’s interest in this residency
  • A brief resume highlighting work history and relevant qualifications
  • An artist’s biography
  • A portfolio of relevant work
