Jerwood/FVU Awards 2019: Going, Gone

Email Friend Add to Favorites Report Listing

Applications for the Jerwood/FVU Awards 2019: Going, Gone are now open. The Jerwood/FVU Awards are an annual open call opportunity, awarding two £20,000 moving-image commissions to artists within the first five years of their practice. Each year, the Awards have a curatorial premise to which we ask applicants to respond in bold, exciting, thought-provoking ways.

At moments of upheaval, when everything is up for re-appraisal, the future can be equally up for grabs. Although we are told that the reality of Britain’s future outside of the European Union is not up for debate, discussion about the nature and impact of that severed relationship will continue to rage in the months ahead. The Jerwood/FVU Awards has always provided an opportunity for a younger generation of artists to make work on issues that concern them and affect them. The phenomenon of Brexit and its implications for a younger generation (who, by a significant majority, did not vote for it) is unquestionably one of those issues.

For the 2019 Awards, we would like you to respond, as always, to the ideas suggested by the title and theme. Whatever your views on Brexit (and we are fully aware that opinions on each side are passionately held and wildly divergent), it seems clear that the country is at a fork in the road, where the path pursued and the path not taken will continue to incite powerful, conflicting emotions in millions of people. What some may consider is about to be lost, others will see as being saved. And vice versa.
