Event History

Ours is a unique gallery. Located in a massive Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, NY., the enormous space allows us to exhibit huge artwork. For our ninth WIDE OPEN show we welcome large works. Our curators will use 8,000 square feet for this show. We look forward to exhibiting artist’s work from around the country, in all sizes, subjects, and media. It's completely wide open!

What Makes this event different?

The prestigious juror for WIDE OPEN 9 is Carmen Hermo. She is the Assistant Curator for the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Hermo has organized several of the exhibitions and initiatives celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Sackler Center, A Year of Yes: Reimagining Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum, notably Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirty, and curated Roots of The Dinner Party: History in the Making. She is in the midst of organizing the Brooklyn presentation of the Hammer Museum exhibition Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985. Prior to this post, Carmen was Assistant Curator for Collections at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2010-16), where she served on the museum's Young Collectors Council acquisition committee, and co-curated Now's the Time (2012-13) and Storylines (2015). She has also previously worked with the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art.

Show Dates: May 12 - June 17, 2018

The theme of Wide Open 9 is broad and encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge and freedom and love - eyes wide open...wide open spaces...arms wide open… As with all things, there is the inevitable opposite - wide open to attack…failure...corruption…. What kind of fantasy is this? What does it indicate? This juried show sek to explore the idea of “wide open” in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche.

"As well as looking for skill in the use of a variety of materials, we look for how well that medium relates to the concept or movement, and how fully the artist’s intention or concept is presented and realized. The juror’s awards will reflect that artistic judgment. Virtually every medium is accepted including: Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, Photography, Pastel, Drawing, Print, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Assemblage, Installation, plus Fabric and Video when part of an installation."
