Event History
The Howard Foundation was officially established in 1952 and offered its first fellowships in 1954. 489 Howard Fellowships have been awarded since 1954, totaling over $10 million in grant funding to those in the arts and critical disciplines.
The Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships each year for independent projects in selected fields, targeting support specifically to early mid-career individuals, who have completed at least one major project, and who demonstrate potential to be future leaders in their fields.
The Howard Fellowships are intended primarily to provide artists, scholars, and writers with time to complete their work. The Fellowships are not intended for publication subsidies, for equipment purchase, for preparation of exhibits, or to support institutional programs.
A total of 8 fellowships will be awarded for 2022-2023 in the fields of Photography and Film Studies.
