Why we do it?
In 1520, Magellan spends the winter in San Julián Bay, survives the mutiny of his captains, plays a key role in the encounter between Europeans and natives, celebrates the first mass on what would later become Argentine soil, and the first record of an astronomical event in the Southern Hemisphere is made. Years after his stay, the legendary English privateer, Francis Drake, decided to execute Thomas Doughty on these very shores.
It was also in the bay of San Julián where Lord Anson, pursued by a squadron of the Spanish Navy, decided with his captains to attack the fort of Valdivia. Years earlier, it had been the refuge of John Narborough, the first navigator to map the bay. From that first circumnavigation to the arrival of the HMS Beagle with Darwin on board, San Julián was a mandatory stop for those who had to reach Cape Horn.
Honoring that legacy, the Thematic Museum Nao Victoria of Puerto San Julián was built in 2005, a full-scale replica of that Magellan vessel. This is a space where it is sought to provide visitors with an immersive experience of the historical narrative.
