Event History
This is the fourth-annual Hariban Award, presented by the Benrido Collotype Atelier. Recipients get free transportation to and two weeks’ accommodation in Kyoto, Japan, for a unique chance to collaborate with Kyoto’s master artisans. During the photographer's stay, the winner will be afforded an amazing opportunity to print exquisite collotypes of their best work. These will then be part of the Kyotographie 2018 exhibition. Photographers at all levels in their career are invited to submit monochromatic photographs for a chance to win this remarkable award. In addition to the grand prize, the jury will award honorable mentions to noteworthy competitors, whose work will be featured in the competition catalog.

The Benrido Collotype Atelier will make reasonable efforts to protect your submissions. We are not, however, liable for damage, loss, or replacement. All entrants agree to grant Benrido Collotype Atelier permission to showcase their work for marketing and promotional purposes only, directly related to Hariban Award and Benrido programming. This use may include, but is not limited to, publication in printed materials, advertisements, electronic media, websites, social media outlets, or magazines. If selected, entrants agree to grant Benrido permission to publish their image in an exhibition catalog. All images used by Hariban and Benrido will carry a credit line of the artist. Photography Contest: Submit your work to win a trip to the ancient city of Kyoto. Once there, create your own collotype portfolio, for inclusion in Kyotographie 2018 exhibition.
Eligibility: This competiton is open to all photographers whether professionals or amateurs working in black and white.
Prize: The grand prize winner benefits from an all expenses paid trip to Kyoto to produce a collotype portfolio at Benrido Collotype Atelier. The collotype portfolio will be exhibited at Kyotographie 2018. The work of both the grand prize winner and honorable mentions will be included and featured in the competition catalogue.
Jurors: Michael Famighetti (Editor, Aperture Magazine), Thyago Nogueira (Photographer, curator, and editor of ZUM magazine), Tristan Lund (Owner of Tristan Lund ltd, art consultant and dealer to collectors of photography, and curator), Rong Rong & Inri (Founders and directors of the Three Shadows, photography art center).
