Event History

Terra Vivente was founded in 2013. It runs during the summer. For 2019, it offers residencies in Sardinia, Peghera in the north and in Pietraroia in the south of Italy.

What Makes this event different?

Terra Vivente is located in small villages off the tourist route, allowing for an immersive experience. In each of the locations, there is beautiful scenery and strong local food traditions. Artists working with social practice and community engagement, or on themes of food or sustainability are encouraged to apply.

Terra Vivente is an artist-run residency that invites up to four artists to spend time in an Italian village to explore, research, create work and engage with each other and the community for four-week periods. Because many villages in Italy are losing their youth who migrate to larger urban centres for education and jobs, Terra Vivente, in bringing artists to small communities, assists in rejuvenating. Hosting activities events that involve locals as well as encouraging the local community to share their traditiions creates a cultural exchange of mutual benefit. Many smaller communities are interested in the zero kilometre diet, so food-related projects are welcome, as are projects with a focus on sustainabilty or collaboration. Artists are housed in apartments, sharing with one or two other participants. They share a studio. An exhibition is held at the end of the residency period. Terra Vivente is independently run so it is not able to offer financial support. There is a fee of 900 Euros to cover the cost of accommodation, studio and some transportation.
