Event History

This is a unique gallery space housed in a massive Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, NY. The enormous space allows the gallery to exhibit really huge work, for the tenth WIDE OPEN show, and they welcome it. The curators will use 8,000 square feet for this show, and they look forward to exhibiting artist’s work from all around the country, in all sizes, and subjects, and media (it’s completely wide open!).

What Makes this event different?

The juror for WIDE OPEN 10 is Ylinka Barotto, Assistant Curator at the Guggenheim Museum. Ms. Barotto has assisted on large-scale modern and postwar retrospective exhibitions such as Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting (2015); Moholy-Nagy: Future Present (2016); Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim, which showcased masterworks from the Guggenheim’s modern collection (2017); and Mystical Symbolism; The Salon de la Rose+Croix in Paris, 1892-1897 (2017, for which she contributed to the catalog with entries on many of the show’s artists. More recently, she provided curatorial support for Danh Vo: Take My Breath Away (2018). In addition to her involvement with the exhibition program, Barotto is one of the organizing curators for the museum’s Young Collectors Council, which acquires the work of emerging artists for the museum’s permanent collection. Ms. Barotto received an MA in curatorial and museum studies at Accademia de Belle Arti di Brera in Milan and is currently working toward an MA in art history at Hunter College of the City University of New York with a focus on postwar and contemporary feminism.

Show Dates: May 11th- July 7th, 2019

The broad theme of WIDE OPEN 10 encompasses all the possibilities of freedom, knowledge, and love - wide open spaces…eyes wide open... arms wide open, but as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite - wide open to attack…failure....corruption…. What kind of fantasy is this? What does it really indicate? This juried show is looking to explore the idea of “wide open” in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche.

Along with looking for skill in the use of a variety of materials, we look for how well the chosen medium relates to the concept or movement, and how fully the artist’s intention or concept is presented and realized. The juror’s awards will reflect that artistic judgment. Virtually every medium is accepted including Oil, Acrylic, Photography, Mixed Media, Assemblage, Watercolor, Pastel, Drawing, Print, Sculpture, Installation, plus Fabric and Video when part of an installation.
