Call for Artists: Midwest Tintamarresque Interactive Art Exhibition

The Chippewa Valley Museum invites regional artists to submit proposals for Midwest Tintamarresque, an interactive exhibition opening in January 2027. Inspired by the tradition of "face-in-the-hole" cutout figures, this exhibition seeks creative, playful, and imaginative artworks that encourage audience participation and engagement.

Artists are encouraged to reinterpret the tintamarresque concept through humor, storytelling, community connections, and interactive experiences. Proposed works should explore Midwestern themes, culture, history, identity, or perspectives in inventive and unexpected ways.

Selected proposals will be developed into life-sized interactive installations designed to engage visitors of all ages through play, creativity, and participation.

What to Submit

Artists may submit:

  • New concepts created specifically for the exhibition
  • Existing artwork adaptable to the exhibition format
  • Interactive and participatory art proposals
  • 2D or 3D concepts

While 2D artwork is especially well suited to the printed exhibition format, artists working in other media are encouraged to apply. Those considering 3D installations are welcome to discuss project feasibility with the organizers.

Exhibition Focus

The museum is seeking proposals that:

  • Encourage audience interaction
  • Incorporate humor, imagination, or storytelling
  • Explore Midwestern culture, traditions, or experiences
  • Create memorable and engaging visitor experiences
  • Reimagine the classic face-in-the-hole format in contemporary ways

Artist Opportunities

Selected artists will have their work featured in an interactive exhibition hosted by the Chippewa Valley Museum and supported by the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire.

Artists may choose to:
