Event History
In 2023, the Yard launched its first-ever public art open call to Brooklyn Navy Yard-based creatives and creatives living in the neighborhoods surrounding the campus. Two different opportunities to activate the forecourts of Building 77 and 92 were offered. In 2024, BNYDC expanded the area of eligibility to all Brooklyn residents, with the site for the installation being the Flushing Avenue fence line in front of Buildings 3 and 92. These areas provided a point of immediate visibility for those passing by. In 2025, the RFP again invites BNYDC creatives and Brooklyn creatives to install artwork in front of Building 3. The aim for installing public art at this location is to amplify the “fence canvas” for storytelling while drawing attention to two areas of the Yard where the public can access the site. This year, the Brooklyn Forged-themed RFP is planned to be one of multiple public art installations along the Flushing Avenue fence line. These other installations will involve Creatives at the high school and college MFA levels and will extend to the areas along Flushing Avenue at Building 92 and on the fence line in front of Buildings 280, 50/50A, 74, and 275.

Call for Proposals: Brooklyn Navy Yard 2026 Public Art Installation
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) invites Brooklyn-based Creatives to submit proposals for Brooklyn Forged, a new public art installation along the Flushing Avenue fence in front of Building 3. This work will be part of a series of installations extending from Clermont Avenue to Portland Avenue, on view from mid-May to early November 2026. Each project will explore how Brooklyn’s cultural, social, and economic forces shape everyday life, celebrating the borough’s creative spirit.
For this RFP geared towards Brooklyn Creatives, the theme of Brooklyn Forged highlights the skills, materials, and entrepreneurial drive that have shaped Brooklyn’s identity through industrial innovation. Creatives should submit proposals that explore how labor, culture, and economics intersect, producing work that reflects both the history of making and the ongoing ingenuity that defines Brooklyn today. Artworks should demonstrate how Brooklyn continues to forge its identity at the intersection of creativity and industry, honoring the workers, makers, and innovators who sustain its cultural and economic vitality.
