Call for Entries: Art Exhibition on Internalized Misogyny
We are curating a group exhibition to explore and raise awareness about internalized misogyny. Artists are invited to submit work that addresses how internalized misogyny manifests in subtle and insidious ways. This timely exhibition seeks to spark dialogue and reflection through art in today’s socio-political climate. As professors in a small art department, working closely with young people, many of whom are women, we were recently confronted with how internalized misogyny manifests itself in insidious ways.
Two definitions to consider in deciding if you have work, or ideas to create new work, to fit the theme, come from Maria Evteeva’s “Internalized Misogyny: The Patriarchy Inside our Heads” published in the Journal of Integrated Social Sciences (2024, 14(1): 82-108).
“Misogyny is defined as the deep-seated aversion or hostility towards women which operates as cultural practice deeply entrenched within social structures. It serves as a powerful tool for the maintenance and reinforcement of patriarchal power dynamics.”
“Internalized misogyny in women refers to the internalized feelings of self-hatred that perpetuate the belief in their own inferiority to men and the unjust denial of their entitlement to equal rights (Bearman and Amrhein, 2014).”
The article can be found online as a pdf and provides interesting insight that might be useful for personal research.
The exhibit will include approximately 30-35 pieces. It will open at Radial Art Center in Omaha, NE in March 2026, then travel to Blue Cat Gallery & Studio in Wayne, NE during April-May 2026, and then to Tugboat Gallery in Lincoln, NE. For this reason, we ask that the work be limited in size to no larger than 30 inches on any side, including frame, as we will transport pieces to other locations.
Please submit up to three images for consideration by December 15 via the google doc link: https://forms.gle/Ni4rcSxrFf1fkC8p6
We will notify artists of inclusion by January 12, 2026. Accepted work should be shipped to or delivered in person to Blue Cat Gallery. Please note, other than getting the work to Blue Cat, there are no anticipated expenses the artist will incur for participation; however, artists may want to carry their own insurance for artwork that is included in the exhibition. Blue Cat will take care of shipping fees to return work at the end of the exhibition’s run.
