What Makes this event different?
Artwork must be representational. Submissions will be critiqued on originality, artistic merit, and \ technical quality. Artworks have to meet standards of durability of design and public safety. Only freestanding sculptures will be reviewed for the collection. Work must be created by the artist, remain in the exhibit for one year, and be for sale. Selected artists will be notified by the week of April 15th and contacted by the City of Dexter by phone or email. The list of finalists will be announced on City of Dexter’s website and Facebook.
Project Description
The annual sculpture exhibit “Dexter Art Gardens” is sponsored by the Dexter Arts, Culture & Heritage Committee. Four new outdoor sculptures will be selected and added to the current collection and on display for a period of one year. The sculptures will be mounted on concrete pads in high profile locations in historic Dexter, Michigan. The City purchased one of the sculptures in the 2015-2016 display cycle. Additional sculptures may be purchased in the 2017-2018 cycle. Local garden enthusiasts will design complimentary garden displays to enhance the artwork.
The theme for this juried exhibit is transportation based with special attention given to automotive and bicycle sculptures. Artwork must be representational. Print and online and brochures will be provided throughout the year to inspire self-guided walking tours of the exhibit. The brochures will also be handed out during the annual festival “Dexter Daze” and the “Paint Dexter Plein Air Festival”. The sculptures must be for sale and need to remain in the exhibit for the entire year (May 2017 - June 2018).
