Event History
MATERIALS: HARD + SOFT INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY CRAFT COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard + Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. Now in its 34th year the exhibition continues to showcase the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media. In 2016 the exhibition opened to international artists with grant funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Each year approximately 70 works from the hundreds submitted are selected by an esteemed juror for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.
What Makes this event different?
Materials Hard + Soft has been an evolving exhibitions along with the field of contemporary craft. In recognition of the growing international craft movement, we have translated our calls into Spanish & French. We work to create an exhibition that is not just about the beauty of the piece, but about innovation of media and techniques along with the artist's use of their creations as a platform for discussions on issues and topics important to them.
