Event History
The residency is based in a beautiful ‘Maison de maître’ built around 1830 and still retaining its period characteristics. Situated in the market town of Nérac, in the stunning Lot-et-Garonne region, on the northern edge of Gascony, here you will find the ‘real’ traditional France. Medieval Villages are surrounded by green rolling hills that lead your eye to the horizon via fruit orchards and vines. The perfect place to slow down and focus. Your Scottish hosts have many skills between them. Colin Usher is a Photographer and Digital Media expert and Julia Douglas a Mixed Media Artist (specialising in Textiles) and Web Designer. They are also well connected in the area and willing to share their knowledge and contacts with you during your stay.
What Makes this event different?
As this is a self-funded residency, Studio Faire has no expectations towards the artist and hope that this supportive environment, without the pressure to produce, will aid creativity, experimentation and the development of new ideas. Studio Faire offers all creative practitioners a change of pace and the space to create.
Accommodation and Studio/Workspace
A choice of three private double bedrooms are available to residents. These rooms share a shower room with toilet. Accommodation is provided on a self-catering basis.
The artist’s ‘Garage’ studio is cool and spacious and can be accessed from the bedrooms and kitchen. It has a large North facing double door so good natural light during the day and no direct sunshine.
The ‘Bureau’ offers an ideal studio space for a writer, designer or musician. It’s a small room on the ground floor at the back of the house, with a view out over the large back garden… an ideal hideaway.
We also have a live/work space in what we affectionately call ‘The Usher Hall’ as it is a very generously proportioned room (679cm x 460cm), this is particularly suited to writers, photographers and creatives making work in all dry media.
The walled garden is enclosed, offering private, shaded space for reading or drawing under the mature trees, or for dining with fellow residents on the patio. Beyond that there is a wild park full of fruit trees, a perfect hideaway!
Even though the property sits on a road, the large rooms and enclosed acre of garden at the back give a feeling of isolation and are ideal places for focused work. The town is just a 10 minutes stroll away over the beautiful river Baïse, which meanders by just a five-minute walk from the house and is the perfect place to stretch your legs and clear your mind.
