Event History
This program was created to encourage artists to take risks while engaging local girls and gender-expansive youth in workshops that emphasize teamwork, empathy, experimentation, respecting differences, sharing, self-acceptance, and building confidence. Our summer setting of Ojai’s gorgeous Topatopa Mountains was selected to aid all our artists—yes, we mean everyone in the Amplify community, from campers to counselors to artist residents —in their journey towards unapologetic self-discovery. The Artists-in-Residence Program lasts our whole summer season! What that looks like… Application Deadline | March 1 @ 5:00 PM PT Committee Deliberations & Decisions | Throughout March Residency Award/Decline Notifications | April 15 Residency | June 19–August 7 (7 weeks) in Ojai, CA We encourage residents to teach campers accessible art forms with bold outcomes.
What Makes this event different?
As we so often lean on art to do, campers’ projects empower them when they feel scared, out of control—say, for example, during their potentially nerve-wracking, end-of-camp performances celebrating their vision, teamwork, and resolve for the entire camp community. Artistic processes learned in residents’ workshops demonstrate the value of resourcefulness and teach campers new skills they can use on their own, even when Amplify is a tiny spot in the rearview mirror.
Expectations:
- Design, prepare & deliver 3 2-hour workshops/week (i.e., 6-hour minimum weekly commitment), incorporating the themes mentioned above, to approx. 10-15 campers at a time.
- Live, dine & thrive on campus in our mobile village, complete with private bathroom & shower (room & board) 100% provided; art supplies, however, are residents’ responsibility).
- Host open studios hour for at least one hour/weekday (i.e., 5-hour minimum weekly commitment) so campers can watch you work, ask questions & seek guidance for their own projects.
- Bring a car/moped/etc. to come & go as you please (campus is ~10 miles from town), also no visitors allowed to ensure everyone’s safety from COVID-19.
