IKIGAI: The Joy of Little Things

Email Friend Add to Favorites Report Listing

  • THEME:  Ikigai (生き甲斐, lit. 'a reason for being') is a Japanese concept referring to something that gives a person a sense of purpose, a reason for living.  Whether big or small, your ikigai is the path to success and happiness in your own life.  We invite you to submit work that contemplates the Joy of Little Things by submitting smallworks, which in this instance will be defined as work that measures 12"x12" or smaller.
  • MEDIA:  We are open to any physical media; however, we are not equipped for digital media or digital installations.  All work for this show must be 12" x 12" or smaller.  We encourage artists in recovery to participate; however, it is not a requirement for participation, and you are not required to identify yourself as being in recovery unless you independently choose to include that information in your artist statement.
  • PARTNERSHIP:  In conjunction with this show, The FORD Studios is partnering with Mount Rogers Community Services and (h)Appys (a collaborative project between Mount Rogers Community Services and Mount Rogers Health District) that offers safe and sober places for folks in recovery and those who support them.  From April 2023 to April 2024 (h)Appys participants are endeavoring to find joy in little things by folding 1000 origami cranes from hand-illustrated paper for the front window of The FORD Studios. Traditionally, it was believed that if one folded 1,000 origami cranes (in Japanese, called “senbazuru”), one's wish would come true. It has also become a symbol of hope & healing during challenging times.
  • JURORS:  Your jurors will include Rachel Gibson ( @ArtistRachelGibson, a mixed media artist & gallery director at The FORD Studios) & Ginny Moorer (Trauma Recovery Coordinator Mount Rogers Community Services).
  • SALES: The FORD Studios retains 35% commission and pays on or around the 20th of the month following the sale.
  • ENTRY DEADLINE: March 10, 2024.  Work will be accepted on a rolling basis.  Once the show is full, the call will be ended; therefore, early entry is recommended.
  • ENTRY FEE:  There is no entry fee, nor any participation fee.  The only cost to artists is the shipping of accepted work to the gallery.
  • SHOW RUN:  April 5 - May 18, 2024
  • RECEPTION:  Friday, April 5, 2024
