What Makes this event different?

Gate44 is a visual culture production and printmaking studio based in Milan, housed in a former factory. Our workshop encompasses a variety of techniques, including relief printing, intaglio, lithography, screen printing, letterpress, fine-art digital printing, and more. We operate as a multidisciplinary space where traditional fine art printmaking techniques merge with experimental practices, encouraging dialogue and cross-contamination among different artistic languages.

Image Usage Rights

Images and videos captured during the residency remain the property of Gate44 for promotional use. The artist may request copies of these materials for inclusion in a portfolio, website, or other promotional purposes, but they may not be used as standalone artworks. We respect the artist’s intellectual property, and further information regarding usage and rights will be provided.

Call to Artists for a 2-Week Printmaking Residency in Milan

This call for artists is dedicated to supporting and advancing printmaking in today’s contemporary art landscape. It highlights and celebrates artists who embrace an interdisciplinary, innovative, and experimental approach to the medium, encouraging fresh perspectives and creative exploration.

Winner’s Award

1. Two-week funded production residency in Milan (April 2026–April 2027; dates arranged with the artist)
2. Technical support from a skilled team for producing one or more editions.
3. €1000 materials budget.
4. 24/7 access to a fully equipped studio for relief printing, intaglio, photo-lithography, photo-polymer, screen printing, letterpress, and fine-art digital printing.
5. Private on-site apartment with kitchen, bathroom, and courtyard near the studio.
6. Basic print-shop materials included (cleaning agents, solvents, rags, spatulas, squeegees, rollers).
7. Social media coverage and a feature on Gate44’s website.

Target Applicants

• • Artists whose practice already includes printmaking to some extent.

  • Artists who have a minimum base knowledge and understanding of one or more print techniques (even though professional technical assistance will be provided).

  • Artists who are eager to expand their technical toolkit and expressive potential.

  • Artists who embrace experimentation, interdisciplinary approaches, and the blending of multiple printmaking methods.

Requirements

• Works must fit within a maximum paper size of 50 × 70 cm.
• Produce at least 10 finished prints, including one edition or multiple unique pieces.
• Provide n. 3 (three) copies of each edition to Gate44’s archives.

• Email submit.gate44@gmail.com with subject: Open Call | Name Surname. Include full name, nationality, country of residence, date of birth, and preferred residency period between (April 2026 and April 2026)
• Attachments (max 12 MB each):

  1. Payment receipt.

  2. Project Proposal: concise PDF with objectives, sketches/mockups, techniques, formats, edition numbers, and other relevant info.

  3. Portfolio: recent print-related works, artist statement, bio, social media, website.
