What Makes this event different?
Adachi is the only foundation that is dedicated to the preservation of traditional woodcut printing techniques. The foundation trains artisans and invites artists to collaborate. These activities expand the creative possibilities of woodcut printmaking.
Call for Entries: Adachi Contemporary UKIYOE Award 2025
The Adachi Contemporary UKIYOE Award 2025 invites submissions from artists interested in shaping the future of 21st-century ukiyo-e. This award celebrates the enduring legacy of traditional ukiyo-e — a collaborative art form that historically brought together three specialists:
• The artist, who creates the original design (as exemplified by masters such as Hokusai and Hiroshige)
• The carver, who translates that design into finely carved woodblocks
• The printer, who hand-prints each work onto washi paper
For centuries, these combined efforts produced prints that served as a “mirror of the times,” capturing the cultural and social atmosphere of their era and inspiring audiences around the world.
Established in 2009, the Adachi UKIYOE Award continues its mission to discover artists capable of laying the groundwork for contemporary ukiyo-e. Selected award recipients will collaborate directly with today’s skilled carvers and printers to transform their designs into authentic woodcut prints.
